Eating with the birds at the Leucadia Pannikin train station coffee shop

Dec 19, 2024: Good food and service amid a chirpy atmosphere.

The old Santa Fe-style train station is a landmark here and its open bay doors are used to full effect my the birds that fly in and roost in the rafters overhead. Despite this threat of bacterial avian fecal contamination, the place is swept clean and is a recommended stop on Highway 101 in north Encinitas. Local artists cover the walls with their pieces in rotating shows and the wooden floorboards are worn smooth by decades of patrons.

The barista behind the counter had braids, and I told her they reminded me of the girl in the True Grit movie remake. She said she hadn’t seen it but would look it up.

The bill for three scrambled eggs and a mug of coffee came to just under $20, a receipt is shown at the end. I don’t recall if that included the tip but I think I gave them a dollar because the $4 coffee price seemed high. Maybe it’s for free refills, I don’t know. Will need further investigation.
